Samuel Bushong

Birth: unknown, Germany
Death: 1829

Samuel Bushong, born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, came to America in 1777 with General Baron von Steuben. He died in 1829.

Carrollton Centennial
Published by Free Press Standard

Samuel Bushong – A native of Hesse Darmstadt, Germany; came to America with Baron Steuben and fought for the colonies in the Revolutionary War; he died here in 1835 and was buried in "the honors of war"; his unmarked grave is near that of Peter Bohart.

The Free Press Standard

Samuel Bushong's new marker was erected at the rear of the mausoleum in Grandview cemetery, where lies the humble grave of Samuel Bushong, the only veteran of the Revolutionary War to be interred in the local graveyard. The marker which had been in position since 1829, the year in which Mr. Bushong died, was replaced in 1930 by a new stone, the gift of Will Steen. This monument bears the inscription "Samuel Bushong, Died 1829. Fought under Baron Steuben in the Revolutionary War." The action of time and the elements of the old stone had almost obliterated the letters and Mr. Steen, in order to preserve the memory of this honorable man, transferred the original inscription to a new and permanent marker. Local historians did not record any facts regarding the life of the old soldier and all that is known of him is told on the grave. Baron Steuben was a distinguished Prussian officer who gave his services to the American cause.

Find A Grave Memorial# 98878291. There is a lot of myth about Von Steuben. I did a little bit of homework on
Baron Von Steuben as I was curious about him. He was a very effective
soldier in Europe and came to this country on the THAMAND the 1st December 1777
with 4 aids and volunteered to help Washington. He never really fought
here in this country as a foot soldier in the American Revolution but was
instrumental in organizing Washington's Continental Army as requested by George
Washington into a better fighting group. He put together a manual to be
used for that purpose. George Washington never gave him a commission or
individual command. He was mostly very effective in helping show how to train
men to fight. After the revolution he lived in New York and there in 1794.
That being said, no one actually served under Von Steuben here in this
country.in a unit. If they did, it was in Germany thus the tombstone is correct,
Samuel served under Von Steuben in Germany.

NOTE: This is a very long article and some of which has nothing to do with
our subject so I am only going to quote he middle of the article where
Peter M. Herold mentions Samuel Bushong. Everyone should find this interesting.

PETER'S POLISHED PARAGRAPHS
By Peter M. Herold

My subject at this time in the seventh chapter of Deuteronomy. This is
the type of which the present German empire is the antitype. The Germans
are a religious and a God-fearing people; they gave Protestantism to the
world; they gave the printing press, through which the Bible was spread to all
nations, and the royal family has for their motto "Got Mit Uns" (God is with
us), through which they are enabled to say "Deutchland Uber alles im der
Weldt" (Germany over all things in the World). A few years ago Ballington
Booth and the leaders of the Salvation Army visited Berlin, and after a two
weeks' stay in that weh regulated city they said that they could not improve
upon its religions or its morals, and sailed for America where they found
fallow ground for their missionary work. We are a missionary people, in
that we want everybody to think and believe as we do. We are taught to believe
that everybody who is sent to congress or a state legislature is a
statesman, a scholar and a gentlemen. A map of the United States, showing the
different nationalities located in each state, shows that the German are in the
lead in all the states. Carrollton was laid out by a German, and the only
Revolutionary soldier buried in our cemetery was a German named Samuel
Bushong who came over with Baron Steuben's brigade from Hesse Darmstadt,
Germany, and fought with and for the American colonist. A canvas of this village
shows 75 per cent of German names.

LOCAL NEWS ITEMS - GATHERED IN TOWN, COUNTY AND NEIGHBORHOOD

Carrollton, county seat of Carroll county, is preparing to celebrate
next October, the 100th anniversary of its establishment. The place was laid
out 4 October 1815, by Peter Bohart, a Pennsylvania German, and most of the
land on which the original plat was laid, was given by Isaac Atkinson.
Bohart's body lies buried in the little cemetery there, and shares honors with
that of Joseph Bushong, a Revolutionary soldier, who came to make
his home in the new town and died there.
